OUR STORY

The Coast Cafe brings a piece of the South to the eclectic city of Cambridge, Massachusetts. From the delectable dishes to the familial atmosphere, Anthony Brooks has managed to instill pieces of his upbringing into the foundation of the neighborhood-favored restaurant, including its namesake, as it thrives in the very neighborhood in which Anthony grew up, “The Coast.”

From the very beginning, this family-fueled business exhibited true grit. In partnership with his sister, Julie, and with the help of their parents, Major and Velmer, Anthony founded The Coast Cafe in 1997. However, the restaurant was not officially open until 1999. The Brooks family spent this time learning the ins and outs of starting a business and remodeling the now beloved little storefront on River Street. Sadly, the restaurant was open for just one year before their father, Major, was diagnosed with cancer. They decided to close the restaurant while the family cared for their patriarch before his passing.

With time and healing, Anthony, also known as Tony, decided to assume ownership of The Coast Cafe in memory of his father, who lived as a dedicated community volunteer in Cambridge. Anthony wanted to give back to the community through sharing family recipes as well as bring the business to the next level. With new equipment, perfected recipes, and a hope in God’s will, Anthony reopened The Coast Cafe in 2004. Since then, the small shop has become one of the most highly rated soul food restaurants, but much more in the hearts of Cambridge dwellers.

The Coast Cafe truly embodies the values of family, grit, and quality. Since the founding of the soul food joint in 1997, the Brooks family persevered through the many unforeseen obstacles, yet for the past 17 years the restaurant has also never wavered in quality. Today, Anthony and his family continue to serve healthy, savory soul food made with 100% pure love!
